InfoErnest D. Davis is the 19th Mayor of Mount Vernon, New York. Mayor Davis served six consecutive two-year terms as a Westchester County Legislator before he was elected as Mayor on November 7, 1995. Ernest D. Davis was re-elected to a second term of office in November 1999.

During his tenure as County Legislator, Ernest Davis understood the problems of our communities and fought for solutions. He led the way in advocating recycling to help maintain the environment and to cut the cost of garbage disposal, was a proponent of the registration of hand guns, led the fight against the legalization of assault weapons, helped to create the legislation that established the African American Advisory Board and led the fight to support funding for day care and health centers. Mayor Davis' philosophy is based on the understanding that if the cities fail, then we all fail.

Mayor Davis is an architect by profession who formerly headed a firm based in Mount Vernon, E. Daniel Davis Architects, and designed many versatile buildings including residential housing, churches, day care centers and government projects.

For many years, Mayor Davis has been involved in community and civic organizations including Life Member of the NAACP, member of Progressive Lodge #64, board member of the YMCA, The Salvation Army Service Unit. The Westchester Arts Council, The Institute for Student Achievement, and the Hoff-Barthelson Music School. Mayor Davis is a lifelong member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, where he was voted Omega Man of the Year. He is also a member of the African-American Men of Westchester and a lifetime member of the National Council of Negro Women.

Mayor Davis is the recipient of more than sixty awards ranging from Nelson Mandela High School "Man of the Year" award to the "Lifetime Achievement Award" from the Westchester Philharmonic.

In addition to serving as County Legislator, Ernest Davis also served as Commissioner of Assessment, Chairman of the Real Estate Board, Chairman of the Planning Board and Commissioner of Buildings in the City of Mount Vernon, New York.

Ernest D. Davis graduated from North Carolina A&T in 1960 with a B.S. in Architectural Engineering and pursued his studies at New York University and City College (New York) in the Masters of Urban Design Program.

Mayor Davis is married to Bettye. They have two daughters, Rene and Lisa, and two grandsons.
