Ran for the Alabama Democratic nomination for the U.S. Congress in 1988 against the late Judge Claude Harris.
Was certified in 1994 by Alabama to have votes counted for Governor in the General Election.
Tested the waters as a candidate for the Democratic nomination for the United States Senate in 1996. He ended up not running.
1998 was a Candidate for Governor in the Alabama Democratic Party primary with Governor Don Siegelman, Lenora Pate, and Lee Lamb. Wayne finished 3rd receiving votes in each and every County throughout Alabama.
Wayne finished 6th overall, out of the nine Gubernatorial candidates, both Republican and Democratic.
Wayne's vote total was next in line behind Former Governor Guy Hunt of Holy Pond, Alabama, and ahead of three professional politicians, one of which spent over $500,000 on his bid.
After the 1998 Governor's race, Wayne stayed very active with a number of causes. Most notably is the M.I.R.K.O.
M.I.R.K.O. is an acronym that denotes the Marijuana Information Reform Kythe Organization.
The Marijuana Information Reform Kythe Organization is a group of very knowledgeable voting citizens that desire that the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937 be repealed. This repealing would bring an end to all of the criminal penalties that presently apply through that federal law. With this new support, in 2002 Sowell ran for the Democratic nomination for the United States Senate against Mr. Julian McPhillips and Ms. Susan Parker.
Even though Wayne was on military leave for over two months of the campaign, he managed to force a run-off between Julian and Susan, both of whom lobbied for his run-off causing votes and his personal endorsement, which after tough deliberations, went to Susan Parker.
Today, Mr. Wayne Sowell has the needed experience and common sense, that is necessary to serve our country, in our time of need as Alabama's junior U.S. Senator.
