Info | JONES, William Carey, a Representative from Washington; born in Remsen, Oneida County, N.Y., April 5, 1855; attended the public schools, the West Salem (Wis.) Seminary, and was graduated from the law department of the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1876; was admitted to the bar the same year and practiced in Madelia, Minn., until 1883; city attorney of Madelia in 1882 and 1883; moved to the Territory of Washington in 1883 and settled in Cheney; city attorney of Cheney 1884-1889; moved to Spokane, Wash., in 1887; prosecuting attorney for the twelfth district of the Territory of Washington 1886-1889; upon the admission of Washington into the Union was elected attorney general of the State and served from 1889 to 1897; delegate to every Territorial and State Republican convention from 1884 to 1894; chairman of the State central committee of the Free Coinage Republican Party in 1896; elected as a Silver Republican to the Fifty-fifth Congress (March 4, 1897-March 3, 1899); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1898 to the Fifty-sixth Congress; affiliated with the Democratic Party; delegate to all Democratic State conventions from 1904 to 1924; resumed the practice of his profession; died in Spokane, Wash., June 14, 1927; remains were cremated and the ashes scattered over Liberty Lake, near Spokane, Wash.
