InfoMcCARTHY, Eugene Joseph, a Representative and a Senator from Minnesota; born in Watkins, Meeker County, Minn., March 29, 1916; attended public schools in Watkins, Minn.; graduated from St. John’s University, Collegeville, Minn., in 1935, and from the University of Minnesota at Minneapolis in 1939; taught in the public high schools of Minnesota and North Dakota 1935-1940; professor of economics and education at St. John’s University 1940-1943; civilian technical assistant in the Military Intelligence Division of the War Department in 1944; instructor in sociology and economics at St. Thomas College, St. Paul, Minn., 1946-1949; elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-first and to the four succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1949-January 3, 1959); was not a candidate for renomination in 1958; elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate in 1958; reelected in 1964 and served from January 3, 1959, to January 3, 1971; was not a candidate for reelection to the Senate in 1970; unsuccessful candidate for election to the Senate in 1982; unsuccessful candidate for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States in 1968, 1972, and 1992; was a resident of Woodville, Va., until his death on December 10, 2005.
