Info | JAMES F. COFFEY, a partner at Deutsch Williams, is the Chair of the Corporate Law Group and Co-Chair of the Bankruptcy Law Group. He represents clients in connection with complex financing transactions, mergers and acquisitions, and restructuring matters. His practice focuses on creditors' rights, secured transactions, and insolvency matters, including the representation of lenders in loan transactions, workouts and bankruptcies; businesses in connection with financial restructurings and acquisitions (particularly acquisitions of financially troubled companies); investors in connection with buyouts and turnarounds; and secured and unsecured creditors in connection with bankruptcy proceedings. Mr. Coffey participates in all aspects of debt restructurings and bankruptcy reorganization. He renders advice on corporate governance and management-side employment law issues and negotiates and drafts all forms of contracts and agreements including executive compensation and severance agreements.
Prior to joining Deutsch Williams, Mr. Coffey operated his own law firm in Boston for eight years. He grew his firm from one, to as many as twelve lawyers during this time period plus support staff. Mr. Coffey has been recognized in "Who's Who in American Law".
Mr. Coffey is an Adjunct Professor of Law at the New England School of Law where he teaches Corporate Finance. He is a frequent lecturer for Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education (MCLE), the National Business Institute (NBI), and the American Bankruptcy Institute (ABI). He is also the author of numerous legal articles and publications on bankruptcy law and practice. Mr. Coffey received his undergraduate degree, cum laude, from Providence College, and holds law degrees from both New York University School of Law and New England School of Law.
Mr. Coffey is a member of the Boston Bar Association (Business Law Section), the MIT Enterprise Forum, the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce, and is a member of the Massachusetts and District of Columbia bars. He is admitted to practice before the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, and the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts. Mr. Coffey serves on the advisory Board of Catholic Charities for the Archdiocese of Boston.
Mr. Coffey is a competitive squash player (Massachusetts State Champion 1998), and enjoys golf, history, skiing, marathon running, and Theodore Roosevelt. He resides in Hopkinton, Massachusetts with his wife, Christina, and their three daughters, Bridget (7), Caroline (5) and Meredith (2). Mr. Coffey is active in his community. He serves as a youth soccer coach. He is also a member of St. John The Evangelist Church in Hopkinton.
