Info | Few politicians have the opportunity to remake an office once elected; even fewer leave a mark on the history of the entire state. There is no doubt, however; that John Koontz, Nevada's eleventh Secretary of State (1947-73), left a legacy unlike that of any other person who has held the office. John Koontz served as Nevada Secretary of State longer than any other person. If, as expected, term limits become a reality in this state, his record 26 years as Secretary of State will stand forever unchallenged. During his tenure, he brought about many changes in the office and in state government, not the least of which was the creation of a State Archives.
A true Nevada character born in a tent in Goldfield in 1906, John Koontz was prone to colorful language. He loved a good story. He served as auditor of Esmeralda County, answered his country's call during World War II, and went on to become chief deputy bank examiner and deputy state auditor before seeking the office of Secretary of State in 1946. He came to personify the office, working with five different governors and countless legislators during his years of service. He retired in 1973, but remained a constant fixture in Carson City life. Secretary Koontz died on March 21, 1995.
No one cared more about political history and the documents which represent it than John Koontz. The story of how he rescued the state's oldest records from decay in the dirt-floored Capitol basement is legendary. It is therefore fitting that this Tenth Edition of the Nevada Political History be dedicated to the memory of Secretary of State John Koontz.
