Info | Marjorie Velázquez is a daughter of the Bronx--born and raised in the borough to Puerto Rican parents who moved here in the 1970’s to build a better life for their family. Her parent’s journey and perseverance taught Marjorie valuable lessons of hard work, commitment to education, and a dedication to her Bronx community throughout her life.
Marjorie’s roots in the community were formed during her early years, attending public schools in Parkchester and St. Catharine’s Academy for high school in Pelham Parkway before earning her degree in Finance and Accounting at New York University (NYU). After graduating NYU, Marjorie worked in several corporate finance, budgeting, and accounting positions, where she designed and implemented accounting strategies for various regions around the world.
In 2012, Marjorie suffered life-changing injuries from a workplace accident and a subsequent serious car crash that left her temporarily disabled. During this time, Marjorie witnessed first-hand the dysfunction and excessive costs of the healthcare system, and struggled to recover.
Always a fighter, she found a path to recovery through giving back to her community more. During her recovery, Marjorie’s life went from one of painful struggle to one of public service. Marjorie volunteered her time to campaign for several historic candidates, and support Democratic initiatives across the Bronx.
Marjorie also joined Bronx Community Board 10 where she served as treasurer and Municipal Services Committee chair, which focused on providing a much-needed voice to the community on issues ranging from transportation to parks services and other quality of life issues. Marjorie has also focused her time on the community board to help empower and promote advocacy on important issues of racial and gender equality, public safety and funding communities.
When the COVID Pandemic struck the Bronx, Marjorie worked day and night to help her community get through the pandemic. She was on the frontlines helping to coordinate PPE supplies and distribute it to her community, as well as ran food drives and personally delivered food to families throughout the district. She used her voice advocating to have vaccination access and sites at NYCHA developments, senior housing, and other parts of her community with vulnerable populations.
Marjorie now serves as our New York City Councilwoman for the 13th District, becoming the first woman of color and first Latina to do so. She is Chair of the Consumer and Worker Protection Committee, and has worked to pass legislation supporting the creation of good-paying union jobs, funding for schools, better access to healthcare, and more options for transit across the district.
Marjorie lives in Country Club with her husband, Jeff, and their three rescue cats, Mercutio, Mio, and Savannah Grace.
