State Rep. (1991-1999)

Harold S. "Sonny" Hanson was born June 18, 1926, in Great Falls, to Hans Hanson and Mamie Odegard. He spent two years in the U.S. Navy from June 1944 to 1946, serving on the cruiser, "Nashville," and the aircraft carrier, "Boxer." In 1950, he graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering from Montana State College. He moved to Billings in 1957 and was the founder and president of Con'eer Engineering. In 1978, he began Energy Conservation Consultants and retired from that in 1993. He was a member of the board of directors for Security Federal Bank from 1980 to 1996. He was also a member of the Billings Rotary Club, Board of Adjustments, Billings Lions Club, Metra Park Foundation, Metra Park Board (and President in 1997), and the Airport Board of Adjustments.

From 1969 to 1971 he was also Vice Chair of the Montana Highway Commission and Vice Chair of the Highway Patrol Board. He was also a finance chair for Congressman Battin in 1966 to '68. He actively enjoyed the political process, serving as first as a legislative lobbyist for over 25 years. He was then elected to represent House District 9 in the state legislature from 1991 to 1998.

Harold S. "Sonny" Hanson passed away June 28, 2004, at St. Vincent Healthcare.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce; twin sons Kim of Billings and Kerry (Nancy) of Satellite Beach, Fla.; and daughter Deborah (Dale Gilbert) of Ulm. He also had one beloved granddaughter, Severin Gilbert and other numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins.


Memorial services will be held Friday, July 2, at 11 a.m., at King of Glory Lutheran Church, 4125 Grand Ave., in Billings.

Cremation has taken place.
