InfoThomas T. Simmons was raised in a working class family, as the son, grand-son, and great-grandson of fire chiefs. Thom continues to follow his family heritage of service as an Auxiliarist in the Holyoke Flotilla of the U. S. Coast Guard.

Thom is a graduate of Hofstra University, where he obtained a double Bachelor of Science degree in Economics and Business, and then received a Juris Doctor from Hofstra Law School with an emphasis in environmental law.

After working as a commercial shellfisherman, tractor-trailer driver, and as an attorney working for Vietnam Veterans on the Agent Orange case, he was hired as the Administrator of the Martha’s Vineyard Planning and Economic Development Commission. In that capacity he successfully expanded the island’s bicycle path network, helped over 200 businesses secure operating permits on the Island, wrote regulations to preserve coastal, pond, and forest resources, co-authored a business plan for the Wampanoag Tribal Aquaculture facility, and developed a low-interest revolving loan system for septic system upgrades which was adopted state-wide.

In 1998, Simmons was recruited to teach for Greenfield Community College, where he has taught courses in Business & Economics. Since 1998 he has served as Chair of the Business Department, President of the Union representing teacher and professional staff, helped to pioneer online course delivery, and developed a new course in Sports Economics. As one of the original Faculty Advisors to the Springfield-based Grinspoon Entrepreneurship Initiative, he has helped hundreds of students obtain seed capital to start their own businesses in western Massachusetts.

He has served on the Shelburne Conservation Commission, chaired a local Pink Pistols Chapter, and served on the Board of Directors of two local HIV-Service agencies. Simmons has six adopted children, and he and his partner live in Shelburne Falls.
