Info | From 1975-1988, Butterfield practiced law in Wilson and Pitt Counties as partner with Milton F. Fitch, Jr.(currently Superior Court Judge), and at various times, Quentin T. Sumner (currently Superior Court Judge) and James A. Wynn, Jr. (former Supreme Court Justice and now Court of Appeals Judge). As a lawyer, he represented countless citizens of eastern North Carolina.
In 1988, G. K. Butterfield was elected as Resident Superior Court Judge for District 7B (Wilson and Edgecombe Counties) and presided over Superior Court in nearly half of the counties of North Carolina before Governor Michael F. Easley appointed him to the Supreme Court of North Carolina in February 2001.
Butterfield served as President of the North Carolina Association of Black Lawyers from 1981-1984. He has also served on the Employment and Training Council of North Carolina and was Chairman of the Board of Directors for Wilson Opportunities Industrialization Center. In 1970, Butterfield represented North Carolina at the White House Conference on Children and Youth, which was responsible for changing public policy with respect to the nation's children. He is a life-long member of Jackson Chapel First Missionary Baptist Church where he has served as trustee for many years.
