Eric Makus was born in Seattle, Washington the son of Sharon Price, a secretary and inventor, and John E. Makus, an attorney. He was raised in Bellevue, Washington and graduated from Newport High School in 1980. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Whitman College in 1984 where he directed news and announced radio at KWCW-FM. He is a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. In 1987, he studied in the Republic of China and graduated with a Master of Planning degree from the University of Southern California where he was commencement speaker. In 2003, he earned a certificate in intellectual property management from the University of Washington. From 2005 to 2009 he read for the bar exam through the Washington State Bar Association’s Rule 6 Law Clerk Program under attorney Dean Standish Perkins, Jr. in Seattle, Washington.

PROFESSIONAL CAREER:

From 1983 to 1984, Makus served as special assistant to Representative Thomas S. Foley, former Speaker of the United States House of Representatives. His subsequent 20 years of chief executive experience spans the fields of law, publishing and software. He is the author of two reference works and is a patented inventor.

Makus was admitted to the Washington State Bar Association in 2009. He is admitted to practice in the United States District Courts in the State of Washington, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, the United States Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces, the United States Court of Federal Claims, the United States Court of International Trade, and the United States Supreme Court. He is also a member of the Tulalip Tribal Bar and admitted to the Muckleshoot Tribal Court of Justice.

His private practice, Makus Law ps, was established in 2010. In 2012, he effectively defended a child in a high-profile school shooting in Kitsap County, Washington. In 2014, he successfully represented a police officer in a controversial use of force incident in Seattle, Washington.
