InfoBruce McPherson became the 30th Secretary of State of California on March 30, 2005, after being nominated by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and unanimously confirmed by both the Assembly and the Senate. He will serve until January 8, 2007, when the term expires.

McPherson, a Republican, is a former legislator from Santa Cruz, who served in the State Assembly's 27th District from 1993 until 1996, and the State Senate's 15th District from 1996 until he was termed out at the end of his second term in 2004. While in the Legislature, he earned a reputation as a moderate and nonpartisan officeholder, a fiscal conservative who was often a social liberal.

He served on several key Senate committees, including Public Safety, the Sub-Committee on Criminal Procedure and the Select Committee on Anti-Terrorism Policy (all of which he chaired), Education and Environmental Quality (both of which he was Vice-Chair), Appropriations, Budget, and a dozen other select sub-committees. A long-time advocate of public education and a leader in protecting the state's natural resources, he has carried significant legislation in the areas of health and public safety, as well as important laws on elections and political reform. Some of the bills he sponsored that relate to his current role as Secretary of State, and that were signed into law, include legislation to require candidates to post their campaign disclosure reports online and to create a bipartisan commission to study the effectiveness of the Political Reform Act. He also introduced legislation to make the Secretary of State a nonpartisan elective office and to require assigning a unique identifier to voters to ensure there is no duplicate voting. Along with the Senate President Pro Tem, he co-authored Proposition 59, the ballot measure enacted by voters at the November 2004 election that provided additional access and openness to government records.

A graduate of Cal Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo with a degree in journalism, he worked as a reporter and editor of his formerly family-owned Santa Cruz Sentinel from 1967 until 1992.

He and his wife Mary are the parents of a grown daughter, Tori Kistler. She and her husband Dave have provided the Secretary of State and his wife with a grandson (Cooper) and a granddaughter (Sydney). Their son, Hunter, was killed in a San Francisco street robbery in November 2001. Secretary McPherson is a fourth-generation Santa Cruz native.

As Secretary of State, McPherson heads an agency of 490 employees involved in the elections, political reform, business programs, Uniform Commercial Code filings, commissioning notaries public, and protecting and showcasing the state's history through the California State Archives and the California Museum for History, Women and the Arts.

Secretary McPherson is the recipient of numerous awards for his service to the state as well as his beloved Santa Cruz area. He has been honored for his extensive work in education, marine protection, and public safety/crime prevention, as well as having been named legislator of the year by numerous organizations and associations.
