Born 4/29/1870 in Walnut Grove AL, son of Jesse E. & Helen (Cornelius) Murphree.

Graduated from Walnut Grove AL College 1887; Peabody College, Nashville TN, 1892; A.B., Univ of Nashville, 1894.

Teacher. First taught in a rural school in Tennessee, 1887. Served as principal, Summitt (Alabama) Institute and later City High School in Cleburne, Texas. Superintendent of Cullman (AL) City Schools.

Professor of Math at Florida State College 1895 and then served as President of Florida State 1897-1905, 1909-1927.

Married Jennie Henderson 1897; 5 children.

President, Florida State College for Women 1905-1909. During this time, he served as editor of the publication Florida School Exponent, 1907-1909.

Director, Florida Historical Society

A Baptist, Murphree served as President of the Florida Baptist Convention 1922-1924 and as vice president of the Southern Baptist Convention 1924-1925

Died 12/20/1927 in Gainesville FL.
