Info | Andrew Hohns, 25, is a lifelong resident of the City of Philadelphia.
Andrew's first major foray into civic involvement began when he formed an AIDSWalk team from Masterman High School. This set the stage for a long commitment to public service, continuing as a volunteer at Thrift for AIDS, MANNA, Philly Cares, Philadelphia ASAP, and local clean-up efforts.
Andrew graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2000 with a B.S. in Economics from the Wharton School. While at Penn, Andrew also completed the requirements for a major in Classical Studies. During college, he established the first annual commemorative Fringe Festival mural, in collaboration with the City's MuralArts Program. Andrew has continued his involvement with the MuralArts Program, now serving on its board of directors.
Professionally, Andrew leads the Private Equity Department for Cohen Brothers and Co., a Center City Philadelphia investment bank. After graduating from Wharton, Andrew became one of the founding members of this company, which has since created over 40 jobs in the financial services sector in Center City. Andrew’s early success in business was recognized in 2003, when he became the youngest person to receive the Philadelphia Business Journal’s “40 under 40” award.
Andrew also serves as a board member and co-founder of Young Involved Philadelphia (YIP), a 600 member group dedicated to increasing civic engagement among young Philadelphians and facilitating reforms to improve the City. Over the summer of 2003, YIP formed the Coalition to Free Love Park, whose "balanced solution" for mixed use at the park has secured the endorsement of the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Daily News, and a majority of City Council members. Other successful advocacy efforts of YIP include the fight to continue marginal cuts in the City Wage Tax and the defense of our First Amendment rights in zoning cases. Most recently YIP scored another victory with its advocacy surrounding campaign finance reform in the City of Philadelphia.
He is a member of the President's Council at Magee Rehabilitation Hospital, the 8th Democratic Ward Executive Committee, Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania, NARAL-PA, the William Way Center, and Liberty City Democratic Club and has served on the City Controller's Land Value Tax Estimation Panel. He is a volunteer teacher in an after-school program in the District with Philadelphia After Schools Activities Partnership.
Ran against incumbent in 2000 Democratic primary.
