Info | DENTON, Winfield Kirkpatrick, (Son of George Kirkpatrick Denton), a Representative from Indiana; born in Evansville, Vanderburgh County, Ind., October 28, 1896; attended the public schools; attended De Pauw University, Greencastle, Ind.; A.B., De Pauw University, 1919; J.D., Harvard Law School, Cambridge, Mass., 1922; United States Army Air Corps, First World War, 1919; United States Army, Second World War, 1942-1945; lawyer, private practice; prosecuting attorney, Vanderburgh County, Ind., 1932-1936; member of the Indiana state legislature, 1937-1942, and as minority leader, 1941; member of the Indiana state budget committee, 1940-1942; elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-first and to the succeeding Congress (January 3, 1949-January 3, 1953); unsuccessful candidate for reelection to the Eighty-third Congress in 1952; delegate to each Democratic National Convention, 1952 to 1964; elected to the Eighty-fourth and to the five succeeding Congresses and served until his resignation on December 30, 1966 (January 3, 1955-December 30, 1966); unsuccessful candidate for reelection to the Ninetieth Congress in 1966; died on November 2, 1971, in Evansville, Ind.; interment in Oak Hill Cemetery.
