Info | High profile left-wing backbencher and legendary Commons bookie. During the 1945 General Election as Labour candidate in Reading, Mikardo developed a method of systematic electoral canvassing (the so-called 'Reading System') that later became standard in all electoral campaigns in Britain. He was also noted for his enthusiasm for socialism and also for Zionism. Mikardo was a member of the Labour Party NEC from 1950 until 1978 and managed Michael Foot's successful campaign for the Leadership.
Member of Parliament for Reading 1945-50, for Reading East 1950-55, for Reading 1955-59, for Poplar 1964-74, for Bethnal Green & Bow 1974-83 and for Bow & Poplar 1983-87. Chairman of the Parliamentary Labour Party during the February-October Parliament of 1974. Vice President of the Socialist International 1978-83.
