InfoIn 1987 Larry was ordained as an elder in the United Methodist Church. Since that ordination Larry has served congregations and communities throughout the Chicago land area for parts of 3 decades.

During his ministry, Larry has served in various civic roles including his work on the Community Block Grant Committee in the City of Chicago and the Committee on Human Relations for the City of Elgin. Larry’s work has included significant national and international experience related to governance, human rights, economic policy and social justice.

In 2002, as a member of People to People, Larry visited South Africa and participated in a forum addressing the development of the legal system in post-apartheid South Africa.

In 2004, Larry became the General Secretary of the General Commission on Christian Unity and Interreligious Concerns of the United Methodist Church. During his tenure developed significant international relationships which created networks for justice and advocacy.

In 2006 Larry led a delegation of United Methodists to Cuba in order to discuss ecumenical issues, human rights concerns and the changing relationship between our two countries. Larry is committed to addressing human rights concerns within Cuba and the eventual end of the United States embargo against Cuba because this will become a significant trade opportunity for the United States.

That same year, Larry also led a delegation to the Vatican in Rome, in order to dialogue with ecumenical leaders about ways in which United Methodists and Roman Catholics can cooperate to address issues such as human trafficking, eradicating poverty and violence in our communities. This meeting also included a private audience with Pope Benedict.

Community service is critical to Larry’s understanding of mission. Larry is committed to inclusive service and representation and will stand with all of the people of the Second Congressional District, as we work to create a better future.

Larry is a graduate of Chicago Vocational High School, which is located in the Second Congressional District. Larry is a graduate of North Park University and received a Juris Doctorate from DePaul University College of Law. He also holds seminary degrees from Garrett-Evangelical, Chicago Theological Seminary and the Ecumenical Institute of Celigny, Switzerland. He and his wife Debra live in the Calumet Heights community of Chicago. Their daughter Jessica is a freshman at the University of Maryland. Larry is also the Senior pastor of the Southlawn United Methodist Church.
