Mr Nhlanhla Nene is the Minister of Finance of the Republic of South Africa with effect from 26 May 2014.
He is a member of the African National Congress (ANC) and has been a Member of Parliament from June 1999.


Academic Qualifications

Mr Nene holds a B.Com Honours degree in Economics from the University of Western Cape (UWC), a Diploma in Marketing Management; an Advanced Diploma in Economic Policy from the UWC; a Certificate in Economic Policy from University of South Africa and a Certificate in Macro and Micro Economics from the University of London.

In 2000, Mr Nene attended a Course in Evaluating Macroeconomic Strategies at Williams College (CDE), MA, USA.
He matriculated at Gcothoyi Adult Centre.


Positions last held/Career/Memberships/Other Activities

Mr Nene was active in student politics since 1979. In 1990 he organised the first ever strike in the financial under the banner of the South African Commercial Allied Workers Union. He became a labour union shop steward and led a negotiating team for better working conditions during the period 1990 to 1995.

Mr Nene served as Regional Secretary of the ANC Ukhahlamba region from 1997 to 2000 and as chairperson of Kranskop Policing Forum from 1997 to 1999. He was ANC local government councillor and caucus chairperson from 1996 until 1999 and as a Chairperson of Ntunjambili Development Forum from 1994 until 1999.

He worked as a regional administrative manager for the Metropolitan Life insurance for 15 years.
He has also been co chairperson of the Joint Budget Committee from October 2002 to August 2005, and a chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Finance from August 2002 to 4 November 2008. He was a member of the local organising for the FIFA 2010 world cup.

Mr Nene was Deputy Minister of Finance of the Republic of South Africa from 5 November 2008 and was re-appointed to the position from 11 May 2009 to 25 May 2014.
