InfoCongressman Tim Murphy was elected in November 2002 to represent the constituents of the 18th District of Pennsylvania, which includes sections of Allegheny, Westmoreland and Washington counties. He currently serves as a member of the Committee on Veterans' Affairs, Committee on Financial Services and the Committee on Government Reform, and is vice chair of the Government Reform Subcommittee on Civil Service and Agency Reorganization. He is co-chair of the Congressional Mental Health Caucus and was elected to serve as vice president of the 108th House Majority Freshman Class.

Murphy, a psychologist, is one of the few health care professionals currently serving in Congress, and he was the only health care professional in the Pennsylvania State Senate, where he represented the state's 37th District from 1997-2003. He consistently has been an active leader in promoting health care reform, education improvement and economic development efforts in Pennsylvania. As a state senator, he authored Pennsylvania's patient bill of rights, worked to increase penalties against bomb threats, improved homeowner access to mine subsidence insurance, and pushed for improvements in educational accountability and transportation funding.

Murphy chaired the Aging and Youth Committee, was the vice chairman of the Committee of Public Health and Welfare, and focused many of his legislative efforts on issues affecting children and families.

Murphy has worked at a number of hospitals including Pittsburgh Children's Hospital, Mercy, Magee, Transitional Infant Care and St. Margaret's. He holds two adjunct faculty positions with the University of Pittsburgh, serving as an Associate Professor in the department of Public Health and in the Department of Pediatrics. He has appeared on hundreds of television and radio programs and has had numerous articles published in professional journals. He also is the author of the award-winning book, The Angry Child.

Congressman Murphy is extremely active in local civic activities and currently serves on the boards of the Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania and the Children's Museum.

He is a member of the Upper St. Clair/Bethel Park Rotary Club and a number of Chambers of Commerce, and works with Habitat for Humanity.

In 1999, Congressman Murphy was awarded the prestigious Toll Fellowship Program through the Council of State Governments, which is designed to develop the next generation of leaders from all three branches of state governments.

Prior to his election to the Pennsylvania State Senate, Murphy served in the 18th Congressional District's Health Care Task Force and the United States Military Academy Review Board from 1990 to the present. Congressman Murphy received his bachelor's degree from Wheeling Jesuit University in 1974. He earned his master's degree from Cleveland State University in 1976 and his PhD. from the University of Pittsburgh in 1979.
