Born in Memphis, Tennessee, Melissa attended Keuka College and graduated with a BS in Nursing in 1972. With a strong interest in education, she has been on the Board of Directors of Keuka since 1992. She subsequently received her Master of Nursing degree from Emory University and then taught on the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania.



She returned to Jefferson Medical College where she earned her MD in 1982. After an internship at Chestnut Hill Hospital, she completed a residency in ophthalmology at Wills Eye Hospital. Melissa obtained her MBA in Strategic Management from Saint Joseph�s University�s Haub School of Business in 1998. She is an adjunct Senior Fellow at the Leonard Davis Institute of Medical Economics at the University of Pennsylvania and is recognized nationally for her expertise in medical economics.



Melissa is currently the Director for the Center for Value-Based Medicine and is on the faculty of the Cataract and Primary Eye Care Service at Wills Eye Hospital. She also teaches healthcare economics in the Masters of Public Health Program at Jefferson Medical College. Melissa has authored of over 120 publications. She is Co-chief Editor of Evidence-Based Eye Care, Lippincott Williams & Wilkins� launch into evidence-based medicine and has served as President of the Montgomery County Medical Society. Dr. Brown has recently been appointed to serve on the Advisory Council for the National Institute for Aging by Secretary for Health and Human Services Tommy Thompson.



She has been named to Who�s Who in America, Who�s Who in the East, National Register�s Who�s Who in Executives and Business and Who�s Who in Medicine and Health Care. Melissa is active in local, state and national politics and was the Republican Nominee for the United States Congress from Pennsylvania�s 13th Congressional District on 2002. She resides in Flourtown, Pennsylvania with her husband Gary, the youngest of their three daughters, Katie, and their two Great Danes, Izzy and Joey. She enjoys bicycling, jogging, rollerblading and visiting their other daughters, Heather and Heidi.
