Info | A respected educator and municipal councilor, Bryon Wilfert was first elected as Member of Parliament in the newly created riding of Oak Ridges in 1997. He was re-elected in 2000 and 2004.
From February 2002 to December 2003, Mr. Wilfert was Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance and sat on the Finance Committee. In 2003, he was also a member of the Prime Minister's Task Force on Urban Issues. In July 2004 he was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of the Environment by the Honourable Prime Minister Paul Martin and sits on the Environment Committee.
During Parliament’s last session, he was a member of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade (FAIT), the All Party Sport & Physical Activity Caucus, the Advisory Council to the Canada-Korea Society and the Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs of the Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs. He is also the co-chair of the Canada-Japan Inter-Parliamentary Group.
Nationally known for his expertise on municipal issues, Mr. Wilfert served as Municipal Councillor for the Town of Richmond Hill from 1985 to 1997. From 1995 to 1996, he was President of the Canadian Parks and Recreation Association and served as the President of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities from 1996 to 1997.
Mr. Wilfert holds a Bachelor's degree in Arts and Education, and a Master's degree in Political Economy, both from the University of Toronto.
He and his wife Elizabeth reside in Richmond Hill.
