| Info | A native of Surry County, Jim calls Elkin, North Carolina home and has practiced Dentistry there for the last 30 years. Throughout his lifetime, Jim has recognized the importance of strengthening our communities through public service.As an Eagle Scout, a past President of the Elkin Jaycees, and a former member of the Tri-County United Way Board of Directors, Jim understands the importance of giving back to his community. This is a value that Jim learned at an early age from his parents, Dr. James A. Harrell Sr. and Isabel Gibbs Harrell.
It is a value that he and his wife of thirty years, Barbara Hudson Harrell, have imparted to their three sons, Jim Harrell, III a Representative in the NC House (District 90), Matt Harrell, and Chris Harrell both students at the University of South Carolina.
Jim attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the Medical College of Virginia where he was Student Body President and a member of the Honor Council. He then returned to Elkin to establish a successful dental practice. A longtime advocate for the dental profession, Jim has held a variety of leadership positions in the American Dental Association and the North Carolina Dental Society. Most recently, he served as the Chairman of the ADA Council on Governmental Affairs, where he successfully led efforts nationwide to improve access for Medicare recipients to quality dental care. As a healthcare provider and a successful small business owner, Jim understands the complicated issues surrounding the health care industry.
For the last 14 years, Jim has served on the Surry County Board of Commissioners, where he and his colleagues have seen firsthand the negative impact of unfair trade policies on our traditional manufacturing industries. As a member of the Board of Directors for the Yadkin Valley Economic Development Board and Vice Chairman of the Surry County Housing Consortium Board of Directors, Jim has worked with community leaders to attract new jobs to our area and develop sustainable economic development plans for our communities. Jim's approach to problem solving and governing has always been focused on bringing people together, regardless of their political affiliation, to find solutions to the challenges in their community. This is the same philosophy of government that he will bring to the United States Congress.
