InfoThe year was 1980, and Americans were on edge. The economy was faltering as inflation was out of control. The Iranian hostage crisis was dragging on with no end in sight. Oil shortages had cars and trucks waiting in long lines. For good reason, Americans were concerned about the future. That’s when Rod, like so many others, became inspired by a former governor from California who had a vision to reenergize the country.

Ronald Reagan brought a message of hope about a better America in his 1980 campaign for president. He promised to use conservative values like lower taxes and more efficient government to jumpstart the economy. But he combined his policy prowess with an optimistic attitude that was infectious. With his election in the fall of 1980 and his presidency thereafter, Americans once again believed that America could be the “shining city upon a hill.”

Rod, who was born in Waverly in 1957 and grew up in Zearing, has been tremendously influenced by Ronald Reagan. Although Rod had always been involved in public service, Reagan’s vision for a better America shaped Rod’s political philosophy and fueled his desire to participate even more in his community. Rod and his wife, Trish, moved to Carroll in 1985 where they have since been actively involved in their church and community.

Rod and Trish moved to Carroll to help start the Church of Christ, where Rod, a graduate of Iowa Christian College, served as its minister for several years. Since 1991, Rod has served as Development Director for Christian Churches/Churches of Christ in Iowa, where he has helped oversee the development of new congregations throughout the state and has assisted existing churches with strategic planning and leadership development.

Rod has also actively participated in civic affairs in Carroll. He has been an active Rotarian for many years, and is a Past President of the Carroll Rotary Club. He is also a Paul Harris Fellow within Rotary International. Rod also served on the Board of Directors for New Hope Village in Carroll. New Hope Village is a vocational and residential facility for mentally and physically disabled adults. He served on the New Hope Village Foundation Board as well, serving as Foundation President from 1990 to 1993. Rod also has been an ardent supporter of Carroll area education, having served as a school-board member for the Carroll Community School District from 1996-2000.

Rod found a new way to give back to the community in 2001 when he began serving Iowans as a state legislator. Since then he has used conservative values in the Iowa House of Representatives to fight for lower taxes, controlled government spending, bolstering the state’s business climate, improving the state’s schools, and fostering an environment for Iowa’s renowned family values. He has been re-elected four times in his district which includes Carroll County and parts of Sac and Crawford counties. In each election, Rod has run unopposed despite the district having more registered Democrats than Republicans.

As a legislator, Rod serves as an Assistant Minority Leader and is the senior member of the House Republican Leadership Team. His experience on policy issues runs the gamut, having served on the Appropriations, Education, Economic Development, Transportation, State Government, Local Government, Human Resources, International Relations, and Rules & Administration committees.

Rod and Trish’s family also live in Iowa. Rod’s parents—Jack and Darlene—still reside in Zearing, where Jack is a retired American History teacher and Darlene is a retired bank teller. Trish’s parents—Frank and Ellen—live in Renwick, where they farm and own and operate an implement dealership. Their daughter, Lindsey, lives in the Western Iowa town of Malvern with her husband, Shane, and their four children. Rod and Trish’s son, Brett, lives in Iowa City where he is a student at the University of Iowa College of Law.

Rod’s exploratory campaign for governor is about restoring Iowans’ confidence in a competent, efficient state government that is responsive to peoples’ needs. Like Reagan in 1980, Rod intends to combine a deep knowledge of the issues with an optimistic attitude about the future. Just as Reagan’s campaign was about building a better America, Rod’s campaign over the next year will be about building a better Iowa.
