Info | Donna McAleer knows what it means to serve.
And she knows what it means to lead.
West Point & Beyond
A West Point graduate and president of her class, Donna McAleer served her country honorably as an Army officer overseas at the end of the Cold War before going on to work in both the public and private sectors.
During her years in uniform, Donna was stationed in Wurzburg, Germany and served as a platoon leader, company executive officer, and deputy public affairs officer with various units in the US Army’s 3rd Infantry Division and 7th Corps. In 1991, Donna left the service to pursue an MBA at the Darden Graduate School of Business Administration at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.
Professional Life
After graduating business school, Donna spent several years as a management consultant before joining GenRad, a leading producer of electronic test equipment. Beginning on the manufacturing floor in the Service & Repair department, she was quickly promoted to Vice President of Global Logistics and Support Services. At GenRad, she was responsible for the development and implementation of a global logistics and customer support strategy.
In February 2000, Donna left the corporate world and moved to Park City, Utah, to fulfill a lifelong dream: training to represent the United States in the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Bobsled. As a bobsled driver, she finished 4th in Olympic trials, missing the Olympic team by only two spots.
Shortly thereafter, Donna put her corporate experience and business acumen to use for the community, becoming the Executive Director of the People’s Health Clinic, a non–profit organization based in Summit County, Utah. In this role she led a major turnaround for an organization committed to providing quality healthcare for the uninsured.
Meanwhile Donna continued to pursue her passion for sports in her role as a high school and youth coach, and a ski instructor.
Writing & Speaking
Troubled by the behavior of celebrities her high school girls’ volleyball team looked to and the dearth of role models for young people, Donna wrote Porcelain on Steel: Women of West Point’s Long Gray Line. The award-winning book featured women who exhibited courage, strength, and character in overcoming numerous obstacles, both in uniform and later after embarking on civilian careers.
Since the success of her book, Donna has been sought after by many groups around the country to speak on leadership and finding good role models within their communities.
Giving Back
Donna’s non-profit work also includes Journeys Within Our Communities, an organization formed to assist a school and orphanage in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Donna helped provide resources and strategic guidance and served on the school’s first board of directors. She has also served on the board for a number of other non-profits, including BizWorld and the Park City Film Series.
Donna remains actively involved in the West Point community. She serves as Class President and as an Admissions Field Representative in Utah for students interested in applying to West Point and serving our country as a leader of character in our Armed Forces.
Donna also serves on the advisory council of the Women’s Business Institute at Salt Lake Community College.
Family & the Outdoors
Donna is an avid outdoor enthusiast, with a particular passion for skiing, snowshoeing, mountain biking, hiking, golfing and traveling. She is a PSIA and ACE Level 2 ski instructor at Deer Valley Ski Resort in Park City, Utah and has served on the Board of Directors of the Professional Ski Instructors of America – Intermountain Division.
Donna lives in the mountains of Summit County Utah with her husband Ted McAleer, their daughter Carlyn Ann, and Col. (ret) Thayer, their faithful dog.
