InfoJeff Woodburn is a business entrepreneur, political leader, historic preservationist, writer and educator. Woodburn, a 48- year-old Dalton resident, attended local public schools and graduated from White Mountains Regional High School and then Magna Cum Laude with a degree in history from Franklin Pierce University.

Woodburn got an early start in politics, when in 1984 while still in high school he was elected to the 17th NH Constitutional Convention becoming the youngest member ever elected to this body. Two years later, in 1986, Woodburn challenged veteran State Representative Harold Burns for a North Country seat in the House. Woodburn’s upstart challenge to the future Speaker of the House fell short by just 26 votes.

By 1988, Woodburn had established himself a strong political force and when an at-large legislative district was vacated, Woodburn became the first Democrat to win this predominantly Republican (only 25% Democratic) district.

After two years in the Legislature, Woodburn took the reins of a campaign to elect a politically unknown candidate for Congress. Dick Swett went on to defeat Congressman Chuck Douglas in what the Union Leader called “one of the biggest upsets in New Hampshire history.” Woodburn assumed a top position with Congressman Swett and remained part of his office until his defeat in 1994.

Woodburn then turned his attention to business and historic preservation. Woodburn lead a group of investors in saving from demolition the historic Isaac Dow House in Newington, New Hampshire. Home Quarters’ plan to raze the building to make way for a warehouse facility was met with opposition from the town. Home Quarters ended up donating the building to the town, who in turn sold the building to the Woodburn lead group for $1. The building was fully restored.

Shortly afterwards, Woodburn co-founded Historic Properties, a specialty real estate and consulting firm. The company grew from a humble start to become a recognized authority at marketing antique and historic properties. Businesses, schools, museums, government entities, religious organizations, local preservation groups, real estate brokerage firms, and individual property owners have come to rely on Historic Properties to find solutions and create opportunities with historic buildings. Historic Properties has brokered some of the most interesting and unique historic buildings. In 1999, NH Business Magazine named Woodburn “one of the top business leaders of the 21st Century.” He was the 2003 recipient of the New Hampshire Business Review’s “Business Excellence” award.

With the election of the first Democratic governor in 18 years, Woodburn returned to politics to build on the party’s success. Woodburn defeated the incumbent Democratic Party Chairman and at 31 became the youngest Democratic Party Chair in the country. During his tenure from 1997 – 1999 as Chair, Woodburn focused on building the party’s grassroots base and creating a centrist image. On Election Day, the Democrats scored impressive victories by re-electing the Democratic Governor and taking control of the State Senate for the first time since 1912.

In 1999, Woodburn chose not to seek another term as chairman to focus his efforts to retain full ownership of Historic Properties. An entrepreneur at heart, Woodburn has turned a dozen dilapidated commercial historic buildings to successful, beautiful properties. He has entered into 13 separate business partnerships to create an array of enterprises.

In 2002, Woodburn fulfilled a lifelong dream of purchasing his ancestral home in Whitefield. Woodburn’s grandparents purchased an old house on the town common in 1948 to house their five children and their dream of starting a restaurant. After a major renovation, Woodburn and his sister, Melissa Marcum, reopen the Woodburn House Restaurant in 2003. The restaurant closed in 2009.

In 2005, Woodburn sold Historic Properties and returned to his high school alma mater, White Mountains Regional High School, to teach civics and social studies. Woodburn also taught at the Whitefield Middle School and Walden School, in Walden, Vt. He split his time between teaching and writing for various publications.

Woodburn has been a regular freelance writer for New Hampshire Business Review and a columnist about education for Parenting New Hampshire Magazine and legal issues for NH Magazine. He has a long association with Salmon Press– the Coos County Democrat, Littleton Courier and Berlin Reporter – as writer, columnist and full time reporter. In 2011, Woodburn won the New Hampshire Press Association’s best freelance story of the year for his story about the Omni Mount Washington Resort’s efforts to trade mark the name of state’s highest mountain. A published author, Woodburn wrote two sections of the celebrated North Country anthology “Beyond the Notches.”

Woodburn served as his town’s moderator and currently is in his third year as his school district’s moderator. He is married and has 5-children ranging from 21 to 6-years-old.
