A native Arizonan, Randy spent much of his childhood working in the fields as a farm laborer helping his family make a living. He recalls that when his family was working the garlic fields of Parker, his father would often make trips to Phoenix to buy snacks and supplies to sell to other farm workers. Concerning these trips Randy states, "I would often ride for hours on the back of the pickup truck just to help hold down the products. I remember spending 88 cents that I earned in the fields for a pair of goggles to protect my eyes." Randy also remembers participating in Little League games, afterwards being picked up by his older brother in an onion hauling truck so they could "get a quick start in the morning."
Perhaps Randy's habit of getting a quick start in the morning enabled him to have a notable high school career. He participated in basketball and baseball, became the student body president, won the outstanding senior boy award, and was even elected homecoming king. (He was the first non-football player to be elected homecoming king in the school's 50-year history.)
The defining event in Randy's high school career came as a junior when he was selected by the faculty to participate in the CloseUp program and travel to Washington D.C. It was on this trip to Washington that Randy's interest in the political process began to blossom. (Twenty years later, Randy became a CloseUp sponsor and over the course of the last several years has taken several groups of high school students to Washington D.C.)
After high school, Randy worked and eventually went into business for himself. After some difficult setbacks, Randy became determined to go back to school and earn his Bachelor of Arts degree. He worked full-time during the day and went to school in the evenings and weekends.
In 1992, Randy earned his sought-after degree and became a social studies teacher. He went on to receive his Master of Arts degree in Administration and Supervision in 1995.
He married his wife Inez and together they produced two wonderful daughters.
Randy continues to be very busy in making a positive contribution to his community. He currently is the president of the Wolverine-Knight foundation, freshman basketball coach, served as vice-president of his local parish council and an ad hoc committee member of numerous educational and local political issues.
Randy knows what it means to be refined by hardship and to be driven by the American Dream. He believes in hard work, teamwork and the value of education. He is an example to his peers and a role model to the youth he mentors. His candidacy is an extension of who he is, a man of integrity.
