| Info | DWIGHT, Jeremiah Wilbur, (father of John Wilbur Dwight), a Representative from New York; born in Cincinnatus, Cortland County, N.Y., April 17, 1819; moved with his parents in 1830 to Caroline, and in 1836 to Dryden, Tompkins County, N.Y.; attended the district schools and the Burhan’s School in Dryden; engaged in mercantile pursuits, farming, real-estate business, and in the manufacture and sale of lumber; chairman of the board of supervisors of the town of Dryden in 1857 and 1858; member of the State assembly in 1860 and 1861; appointed by Governor Morgan a member of the senatorial district war committee in 1861; delegate to the Republican National Conventions in 1868, 1872, 1876, 1880, and 1884; director, member of the executive committee, and vice president of the Southern Central Railroad for many years; elected as a Republican to the Forty-fifth, Forty-sixth, and Forty-seventh Congresses (March 4, 1877-March 3, 1883); declined to be a candidate for renomination in 1882; resumed former business activities; died in Dryden, Tompkins County, N.Y., November 26, 1885; interment in Green Hills Cemetery.
