InfoGerald J. Pappert became Acting Attorney General on December 15, 2003, when Attorney General Mike Fisher was sworn-in as a judge for the U.S. Third Circuit Court of Appeals.

Pappert has served as First Deputy Attorney General since January of 1997. In that position he oversaw all legal and administrative matters at the Office of Attorney General and also served as the principal advisor to the Attorney General on all major issues.

In addition to managing the day-to-day operations of the Office of Attorney General, Pappert personally handled important legal issues for the office. In 2002 he was lead trial and appellate counsel in the office's successful efforts to block the sale of Hershey Foods by the Hershey Trust Company and the Milton Hershey School Board of Directors.

Pappert also successfully argued before the United States Supreme Court in a case that protected states' efforts to curb the number of frivolous lawsuits filed by prison inmates. In addition, he has successfully argued cases before the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, including the defense of the constitutionality of changes made to the composition and procedures of the state Pardons Board.

Prior to his service as First Deputy Attorney General, Pappert spent eight years as an attorney in the trial department of the Philadelphia firm of Duane, Morris and Heckscher (now Duane Morris LLP), conducting a general litigation practice in state and federal courts.

Acting Attorney General Pappert graduated with honors from Villanova University in 1985 and received his law degree from the University of Notre Dame Law School in 1988. He lives in a suburb of Harrisburg with his wife Ellen, daughter Mary and son George.
