After studying law at the University of Lausanne , he received his doctorate in . He was now working as a lawyer and from 1959 to 1966 was clerk of the Supreme Court . Later he was a lecturer in public law and criminal procedure at the Universities of Lausanne and Bern .
From 1971 to 1987 he was a State in the canton of Vaud (head of the judiciary, police and military departments), and during the same period in the National Council and was 1979 president of the FDP Liberal Group of the Federal Assembly , and President of the Military Commission. From 1989 to 1993 he was President of LPS Switzerland.
Bonnard was a major advocate of federalism . In the years 1978 to 1993 he was president of the Employers' Federation of Swiss Watch Industry and Chairman of the Gazette de Lausanne. In 1987 he was at the University of Lausanne for the honorary doctorate appointed.
