Info | Since 1991 Amanda Aguirre, M.A, R.D. has been the Executive Director of the Western Arizona Area Health Education Center, Inc., a non-profit organization. Amanda has been involved for more than 20 years in public health education and administration with a strong emphasis in U.S.-Mexico border health issues. Her early professional training included a clinical dietetic internship at the Center for Developmental Disabilities, UCLA�s Affiliated Program, Children�s Hospital in Los Angeles, California.
- In January 2000 Amanda was appointed by President Clinton to the U.S.-Mexico Border Health Commission, a presidential commission presently serving under the pleasure of President George W. Bush.
- In 1999 Amanda was also appointed by Governor Jane D. Hull to serve in the Governor�s Commission on the Health Status of Women and Their Families.
Amanda is currently the President of the Rio Colorado Commission, a commission established in Yuma County to promote the collaboration and economic development, which has the mission to unify and benefit the people of the international region of the lower Colorado River.
AWARDS:
- 2001 recipient of the �ATHENA� Award given by the Athena Foundation to the women who have displayed excellence in leadership and community services in Yuma County sponsored by the Yuma County Chamber of Commerce.
- In March 2000 Amanda received the OHTLI Award by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, the highest distinguished award given by the Country of Mexico to individuals living in a foreign country that have demonstrated a commitment to serve communities and families of Mexican origin.
- In January 2002 Amanda appeared on Univision �Nuestro Orgullo� Hispano, a segment in which recognizes outstanding individuals within the Hispanic community and for being a role model for the Latino society.
Ms. Aguirre holds a Bachelor�s Degree in Chemistry from the University of Sonora in Hermosillo, Sonora. In 1981 received her Master Degree from the California State University in Los Angeles, California in Nutrition, with focus on feeding problems of children with developmental disabilities.
Most recently, Ms. Aguirre is the co-founder of the �Nuestros Ni�os� Foundation, a private foundation dedicated to improve the quality of life and meet the needs of children and their families along the U.S.-Mexico border.
