InfoDWIGHT, John Wilbur, (son of Jeremiah Wilbur Dwight), a Representative from New York; born in Dryden, Tompkins County, N.Y., May 24, 1859; attended the public schools; pursued further studies at New Haven, Conn., in preparation for entering Yale College, but abandoned this plan to engage in the lumber business at Clinton, Iowa, in 1879; shortly thereafter moved to northern Wisconsin, where he continued in the lumber business and also engaged in farming; returned to Dryden, N.Y., in 1884; upon the death of his father in 1885 became president of the Dwight Farm & Land Co.; delegate to the Republican National Conventions in 1888, 1892, 1900, 1904, and 1920; elected as a Republican to the Fifty-seventh Congress, by special election, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of United States Representative George W. Ray, and reelected to the five succeeding Congresses (November 4, 1902-March 3, 1913); majority whip (Sixty-first Congress), minority whip (Sixty-second Congress); retired and resided in Washington, D.C.; became president of the Virginia Blue Ridge Railway Co. in 1913, in which capacity he served until his death in Washington, D.C., January 19, 1928; interment in Rock Creek Cemetery.
