InfoKirk Lippold grew up in Carson City, Nevada, and returned home to the Silver State after retiring from a decorated, 26-year career in the United States Navy, during which he rose to the rank of Commander.

Commander Lippold was the commanding officer of the USS Cole when it was attacked by al Qaeda suicide bombers in the port of Aden, Yemen, in October 2000. Commander Lippold and his crew distinguished themselves in the aftermath of that attack by saving the ship, which remains in service today.

Prior to earning his command position on the Cole, Lippold served as Executive Officer of the guided missile cruiser USS Shiloh, and as Operations Officer for USS Arleigh Burke, during which he was responsible for the operation of a $1 billion warship and the training of a crew of more than 300 sailors.

During his distinguished career, Lippold participated in the Achille Lauro aircraft seizure, Black Sea Freedom of Navigation operations against the Soviet Union, and combat operations in the Gulf of Sidra following Libyan-sponsored terrorist attacks in Europe. Commander Lippold’s division officer tour aboard the USS Fairfax County included a deployment to Beirut, Lebanon, when terrorists attacked the U.S. Embassy.

Commander Kirk Lippold is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and received his commission in the Navy in 1981. He earned a Masters of Science in Systems Engineering from the Navy Postgraduate School. Lippold is a 1994 graduate of the United States Army Command and General Staff College, a 2001 graduate of the Joint Forces Staff College, and has served as Administrative Aide to the Secretary of the Navy.

Commander Lippold played an instrumental role in crafting detainee policy for suspected terrorists during the initial stages of the War on Terrorism following the 9/11 attacks.

Commander Kirk Lippold’s personal awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, and the Navy Achievement Medal. He retired from the Navy in 2007.

Since his retirement, Commander Lippold has served as Senior Fellow for the advocacy group Military Families United; a non-profit organization that serves families who have lost loved ones in conflict, as well as those still serving in our armed forces today.
