Representative Sylvia Laughter
Sylvia Laughter, a Navajo Indian, is from the heart of the Navajo Nation: Baby Rocks, Arizona. Sylvia earned a bachelor's degree in Broadcast Communications with a minor in music from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, in 1993.
Ms. Laughter, re-elected in November 2002, will be serving her third term in the Arizona House of Representatives for Arizona's largest district, Legislative District 2, covering northern Arizona. Sylvia represents a district that includes the largest Native American tribe in the United States, and she is the first Navajo woman to serve in the State Legislature from District 2.
Ms. Laughter has served on the board of American Indian Services since 1990. She also currently serves on the advisory board of the Institute for Native Americans at Northern Arizona University. Sylvia is on the planning board for the Native American Women's Business Council.
In her previous term, Ms. Laughter was instrumental in creating the House committee on Native American Affairs, which she co-chaired. She is currently serving as a member of the committees on Federal Mandates and Property Rights, Natural Resources, Agriculture, Water and Native American Affairs and also on Appropriations.
It has been Ms. Laughter's commitment to first represent the best interests of her district, while also working towards the best interest of the state as a whole. in her two terms as a legislator, Ms. Laughter has been successful in working with her colleagues to secure more than $20 million in education funding for her district, as well as for the seniors and veterans of the community.
Ms. Laughter has co-sponsored the successful passage of bills addressing issues of domestic violence, managed care, water and social issues. It is her continued goal to address these issues as well as those of taxation, economic development, energy, and education while in her capacity as State Representative.
