InfoBetty Ireland is West Virginia’s 28th Secretary of State, and the first woman in the history of West Virginia to be elected to the state’s executive branch of government.

The first female ever appointed to serve on the City of Charleston Board of Zoning Appeals (1985-86), Secretary of State Ireland was later elected to serve on Charleston City Council as an at-large representative (1987-91). She served on the Public Safety Retirement Task Force of the Joint Legislative Committee on Pensions and Retirement, as a citizen expert (1991-92). She also served as Executive Director for the West Virginia Consolidated Public Retirement Board (1998-2001).

Educated and trained to be a teacher, Secretary of State Ireland taught for several years in the West Virginia Public School System. Her endeavors eventually took her to the business world where she was owner of Retirement Systems and Services. She was vice president and head of the pension division in the Trust Department of the National Bank of Commerce in Charleston. In 1989 she moved to Jackson and Kelly PLLC and in 2002 became President and CEO of Jackson and Kelly Solutions LLC.

A Charleston native, Secretary of State Ireland is married to Sam Haddad, a Whitesville, West Virginia native. They are the proud parents of four children: Chuck, Andy, Alex, and Janie.
