InfoI would like to tell you why I am running for Congress.

I am running because I care passionately about the future of our children and the safety of our community. My mother raised my brother and me with the values that we all hold dear as Kansans - that we have a responsibility to give back to our community, and to live our lives with integrity and respect for others.

That is why I took so much pride in serving Kansas and our country as a Naval officer and aviator for fourteen years. During that time, I lost my best friend, my roommate, and many other close friends in aviation accidents. I mention that because it leaves a dramatic impression: Selfless young men and women make incredible sacrifices away from family and loved ones for months on end, serving in endless ways to protect or enrich the lives of others, both here and abroad. Suddenly... they are gone. It became so very clear to me that the future of our great nation needs to be led in a manner that reflects the values and dreams that inspired these young Americans. In many respects, I run to honor their legacy and to ensure the future of our country will always be a lasting tribute to the ultimate sacrifices they made for all of us.

My mother was a small business owner in the early 1970's. She was my greatest friend and supporter, and a tremendous person - my inspiration. Unfortunately, she passed away two years ago, much too young at the age of sixty-one. Before she passed away, we had the opportunity to talk about my future. She encouraged me to take the values she instilled in me and combine them with the wonderfully unique experiences I have been fortunate enough to enjoy as a Naval aviator living overseas - and make a difference.

Finally, on September 10th, 2001, I piloted a United 757 from Washington DC to Los Angeles. My brother, who lives in Olathe, called me early the next morning. "Are you watching TV?" he asked hurriedly. When I said "no", he told me I needed to turn on the television. Like all of us, I watched the tragic events unfold. For the next five days I was literally grounded in Los Angeles - and I reflected and did a serious self-evaluation of my life. For the first time in my professional life, I was not part of the response.

I love to fly airplanes. But I believe we are on this earth to make a difference - and as I projected the next 25 years of my professional career, taking people from point A to point B was not going to make that extraordinary difference I knew I wanted to make with my life and for the future of our nation. That is when I decided to run for U.S. Congress. I believe that despite our shortcomings as a country, we are the greatest nation that has ever inhabited this earth. But we are only as great as the leaders we send to occupy those 435 cherished seats in the House and the 100 seats in the Senate. We need leaders with critical experiences and values, who have a vision for our future - founded on the principles that have sustained our great nation.

This community educated me. This community and our nation trained me as a Naval Aviator and sent me overseas to protect our way of life. I ask my neighbors in the Third District to now send me to Washington to be your next Congressman. It would be my distinct honor to serve and to represent you.
