InfoVAIL, George, a Representative from New Jersey; born in Morristown, Morris County, N.J., July 21, 1809; completed preparatory studies; attended Morris Academy at Morristown; engaged in the manufacture of telegraph instruments; member of the State general assembly in 1843 and 1844; appointed by the Governor of New Jersey to represent the State at the World’s Fair in London, England, in 1851; unsuccessful candidate for election in 1850 to the Thirty-second Congress; elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-third and Thirty-fourth Congresses (March 4, 1853-March 3, 1857); appointed February 3, 1858, by President James Buchanan, as consul to Glasgow, Scotland, and served until August 10, 1861; returned to the United States and settled in Morristown, N.J., where he engaged in literary pursuits; member of the court of pardons; judge of the New Jersey Court of Errors and Appeals 1865-1871; died in Morristown, N.J., May 23, 1875; interment in First Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
