InfoJoan Lenes has lived in Shelburne with her husband Helmut for 23 years. They have two children, Sarah, 19, and Peter, 16. She received her undergraduate degree in sociology from the University of Florida and her Masters of Education from UVM. She taught for a number of years at UVM's College of Education, where, through their experiential learning program, she developed internship sites and monitored students' progress. From 1980 to 2001, Lenes was a principal in Climb High, a local business started by her husband, where she worked in personnel.

A former member of the Shelburne School Board, Lenes now serves on the CVU Board of School Directors. As a former co-chair of the Shelburne PTO, she helped raise over $120,000 for the Snelling Community Park. She also served as Program Chair for the Shelburne Business and Professional Association (SBPA). Currently, Lenes is the coordinator for Meals on Wheels, serves on the Connecting Youth (CY) board, and the Burlington-based Art Space Board, an organization that deals with art in the lives of both children and adults. She is also President of the Board of Directors for Robin's Nest Children's Center in Burlington, a non-profit childcare center that serves over 60 families from Chittenden County. Robin's Nest is a model throughout the state for childcare centers. Lenes also serves on the Vermont Drug and Alcohol Council.

"I have a passion for community service and I want to continue to serve," said Lenes when asked about her decision to run for the House seat. "I want to represent all views from my district. I'm open-minded and a problem solver who can work with diverse opinions."
