Info I was born in Kentucky in a town named for the site of the “shot heard round the world” and on the one hundred and eighty first anniversary of Washington’s Revolutionary War-ending victory at Yorktown. It was also the start of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Like West Virginia, I was “battle born.” I share my birthday with Noah Webster, Oscar Wilde, Eugene O’Neill, and the bass player for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. My mother is an award-winning artist; her work can be seen at [Link]

My childhood was spent in New England, including historic Concord, Massachusetts and Mark Twain’s hometown of Redding, Connecticut. I learned to ski in Stowe Vermont where my parents ran the Smuggler’s Inn for several years. My father went back into sales and my adolescence shifted to Perrysburg, Ohio, named for War of 1812 hero Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry. I earned my Eagle Scout rank during our Bicentennial. These experiences, along with family vacations to historic Williamsburg, Gettysburg, and other local sites, were an early influence on my interest in American history.

Upon graduation from high school in 1980, I enlisted in the Air National Guard as an aircraft weapons systems mechanic. While serving in the military and working a variety of odd jobs to pay my expenses, I attended college at Bowling Green State University (two years, honors physics program) and then graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Welding Engineering from Ohio State University in 1986.

For the next twelve years, I worked in the automotive and machine tool industry in the Detroit area and also on contract at GM in New Jersey. In 1992, I became licensed as a Professional Engineer in Ohio, and in 1996 earned my master’s degree in Manufacturing Systems Engineering from General Motors Institute (now Kettering University) in Flint Michigan. During this time I completed coursework and examinations to obtain recognition as a Certified Welding Inspector (American Welding Society), Certified Manufacturing Engineer (Society of Manufacturing Engineers), and Certified Quality Engineer (American Society for Quality).

In 1994, my parents relocated to historic Gerrardstown, West Virginia, and by 1998, I had followed them here. After three more years working in manufacturing in the eastern panhandle, I made a career change and entered the insurance business as an AFLAC agent. Commission work was not my forte and after working retail part-time to supplement my income I re-enlisted in the Air National Guard in Martinsburg for weekend duty, and began teaching in Berkeley County. I served seven years in the Ohio Air National Guard, and six years in the West Virginia Air Guard as an aircraft electrician, honorably discharged in February of this year.

About ten years ago, my father introduced me to local politics. I got involved with congressional campaigns in 2000 and 2002, and served as a poll worker on several occasions. During this time, I was heavily influenced by Atwood’s Back to the Republic and the Federalist Letters which led me to begin an understanding of the proper application of our Constitution. In 2004 I was invited to attend my first CPWV meeting and immediately set to work on membership and building our internet presence. In 2005 I drafted a substantial portion of the party’s bylaws and in 2006 was elected a Trustee. From 2007 to 2008 I led our petition drive to collect over 21,000 voter signatures to secure ballot access for our presidential candidate, Chuck Baldwin. I was unanimously elected party Chairman in 2008 and re-elected in January of this year.

Also this year, I led our petition drive to secure ballot access for our congressional candidate, Phil Hudok, coordinating our team of volunteers at a number of events around the state. Completing that work on July 30th, I had not originally intended to seek office myself. I had previously run for Berkeley County Surveyor of Lands in 2008 garnering 9% of the vote in a 3-way race with no funding. However, in late July I studied the special election legislation, surveyed the political landscape and set-about collecting close to 5,000 signatures to secure ballot access for this November’s special U.S. Senate election.

I thank my parents for an excellent moral upbringing, my family for their love and understanding, my good friends for their support, voters who signed our petitions for their consideration, and America’s founders for their divinely inspired wisdom. As the next United States Senator for West Virginia, I look forward to the opportunity to representing the values and best interests of the Mountain State in federal Congress.
