Info | Kenneth J. "Ken" Block
A Barrington resident for 18 years, Ken Block is a software engineer by training and an entrepreneur by practice. Ken is the President of Simpatico Software Systems, a software engineering firm and Cross Alert Systems, a manufacturer of specialized traffic signals for recreational trail/public road intersections.
Founder of the Moderate Party of Rhode Island, Ken became active in politics after becoming increasingly unhappy with the political choices offered by the existing political parties – neither of which represented his core beliefs, which can be best described as centrist.
Ken grew up in Milford CT, the oldest of 3 siblings. Ken’s father, Bartley, was a professor of biology at the University of Bridgeport and his mother, Janet, was an occupational therapist with the Visiting Nurse Agency of Southern Connecticut. His grandparents, piece by piece, built his family home over many years. When Ken’s parents married, they shared this home with his grandparents. This strong family forged many of the core beliefs and personal strengths that define Ken as an adult. In the Block family, education and achievement were of foremost importance, along with the mantra of always finishing what you begin – and doing it well.
Ken graduated from Milford High School in 1983 and from there went on to Dartmouth College where he earned a BA in Computer Science in 1987. Politics and government were favorite elective courses, and Ken took as many as his schedule allowed.
Upon graduation, Ken’s first job took him to New York City and he worked writing software for Wall Street trading desks. Two years later, a job with Bank of New England brought Ken to Boston. Bank of New England’s financial problems prompted Ken to join a small software consultancy in the Boston area. Ken then took a one year consulting job with GTECH Corporation, coming to Rhode Island in 1991. By 1992, Ken took a full time position with GTECH and bought his first house in Barrington.
Ken left full time employment with GTECH in 1995 and went back to consulting, forming Kinetic Consulting, in 1997. Simpatico Software was formed out of the ashes of the dot com bust in 2001.
Ken now lives in Barrington with his wife Jennifer, a middle school science teacher with an MAT from Brown, and their two active children Sam (age 7) and Anna (age 6). Jennifer has been staying at home with their children.
