InfoJefferson County District Attorney & Ex-State Public Safety Director

District Attorney Dave Thomas is a life-long resident of Jefferson County. Born to Ivan and Betty Thomas in October 1948, he graduated from Golden High School in 1966. Dave's children, Justin and Carrie are graduates of Columbine High School in southern Jefferson County. He and his wife, Shirley, are currently raising their niece, Maggie, who attends elementary school in Arvada. One of Dave's top priorities is developing partnerships with the community in order to address violent crime, crime issues and prosecution philosophies. He and members of his staff meet monthly with the District Attorney's Citizens Advisory Board. Members of the board represent a diverse age, cultural and economic spectrum from throughout Jefferson and Gilpin counties.

Competent
Dave has spent his entire adult life in prosecution and law enforcement positions. He began his career as a prosecutor with the Denver District Attorney's office and became Chief Deputy District Attorney for the Complex Crimes Unit. Later, as an Assistant United States Attorney, he coordinated the Mountain States Drug Task Force. Dave Thomas first served as District Attorney for Jefferson and Gilpin Counties when he was appointed be Governor Lamm in 1985. Dave lost his election bid for District Attorney in 1986.

In January 1987, Governor Romer named Dave Thomas Executive Director of the Department of Public Safety. Dave directed the Colorado State Patrol, Colorado Bureau of Investigation and the Division of Criminal Justice for six years. In 1992, his concerns for justice issues in the First Judicial District prompted him to run again for District Attorney. Voters elected him to a four year term, and re-elected him in 1996.

Committed
Dave is actively involved in issues and activities that make the First Judicial District a terrific place to live and raise a family. As District Attorney, Dave Thomas has developed partnerships with the community and other government agencies to effectively and efficiently address crime issues. The Jefferson County Juvenile Assessment Center -- a national model for dealing with juveniles in trouble with the law, at school or in the home -- was initiated by Dave. He provides leadership for other model programs including -- the Domestic Violence Fast Track program, the Family Violence Prevention Initiative, the Jefferson County Children's Advocacy Center and the Jefferson County MasterPlanning Initiative. He is committed to preventing and reducing the incidence of crime in our community.

Respected by his peers, Dave Thomas is a Past-President of the Colorado District Attorney's Council and Colorado's representative to the National District Attorney's Association. Dave has received numerous awards and recognition, including the Drug Enforcement Administration's Enrique Camarena Award for his leadership in the fight against substance abuse, both on the enforcement side and on the demand reduction side
