| Info | Batesville resident Kenton Adler has formally announced his candidacy for the United States House of Representatives from the First District of Arkansas. Nominated by The Green Party of Arkansas, he will likely face incumbent Democrat, Congressman Marion Berry, and Republican hopeful Rick Crawford in the 2010 election. Adler is an Arkansas native, born in Camden in 1956. His family moved to the Denver metropolitan area in 1965. Ken returned to Arkansas in 1992 and lived in Fayetteville for six years before settling in Batesville.
Kenton received an Honorable Discharge from the United States Navy after serving from 1976-1980 as a meteorologist. His duty stations included the Naval Air Station at Memphis, the island of Diego Garcia in the British Indian Ocean Territory, and on board the U.S.S Enterprise. Adler was voted, "Honor Recruit", by the men in his boot camp training company. He received meritorious advancements on two occasions, and was an E-5 at the time of his discharge. Ken was awarded a Good Conduct Medal, and the Naval and Marine Corp Expeditionary Medal. His work included participating in a supervisory role in one of the first world-wide experiments measuring incoming and outgoing solar radiation in 1979.
Returning to Colorado after the service, Adler attended Metropolitan State College of Denver, and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Visual Communications and Psychology. He worked in commercial printing, and also played guitar in several rock bands. He was known as a talented singer/songwriter in the Denver area. Ken later took a job as an art instructor with Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Denver, and eventually became a learning center supervisor, where he helped inner city youth improve their academic skills, with a focus on using logic, creativity, and critical thinking. In 1992 he decided to return to Arkansas, and he opened a small business selling vintage guitars. He then attended graduate school at the University of Arkansas, where he studied American History.
In 1995 Kenton was hired by UofA Computing Services where he wrote two major grant proposals totaling over six million dollars, which helped to extend the state-wide internet backbone for ARKnet. This allowed for internet access to many smaller institutions of higher education, including several in Disctrict One. That same year, he also began playing the Great Highland Bagpipe as a member of The Ozark Highlanders Pipe Band.
The bagpipes eventually led him to Batesville during the Arkansas Scottish Festival, and introduced him to Lyon College. He applied for a job at Lyon so he could work and live in Batesville, and play with the internationally recognized college pipe band. He currently holds the position of Academic Computing Coordinator at the prestigious institution. Adler is also in the middle of his second term on the Executive Committee of the Eastern United States Pipe Band Association. The association covers most of the eastern portion of the country and has over 2000 solo members, and over 200 bands. The committee oversees administrative duties of the association.
Kenton originally became interested in The Green Party because it offered a viable alternative to forcing a vote for either a Democrat or a Republican candidate. Particularly important now, as real differences between the two parties have become noticeably less. As he learned more about the Green platform, Ken realized it conformed very closely to his personal political positions. The Greens represent a Progressive philosophy in the tradition of Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Franklin Roosevelt, and Lyndon Johnson. They represent such things as strong personal integrity, reform in areas where it is needed, personal choice and responsibility, social justice, stewardship of the environment, and real equality regardless of race, creed, gender, or sexual orientation. Adler is in favor of realistic government-backed healthcare reform that provides for all citizens. He is a supporter of local agriculture, small business, and a strong local economy. Ken also looks forward to working to advance alternative energy sources. He is ready to see an end to government waste, the blocking of personal choice, government interference with civil liberties, and hopes to help rid the country of , "Good Old Boy Networks", and outdated cracker barrel politics.
Adler states, "I recognize the world as a dynamic place that is constantly changing. Our government talks about change, but really seems to go on about business as usual, year after year. It usually benefits the privileged few at the expense of the many. It is time for that paradigm to change in a significant manner. I intend to fight for that kind of change."
Ken is married to Nancy Love, and both are very involved with life in around Lyon College. They also enjoy the numerous outdoor activities presented by residing in such an environmentally rich location . They have a really BIG dog.
