Info | W. Stovall Witte Jr. came into this world on June 8, 1949. He was raised in a small town in the Mississippi Delta and graduated from high school in Dallas, Tx. That’s when Stovall’s desire to serve his country began. He chose to attend The Citadel and fell in love with South Carolina. While his service to our country kept him away, it also prepared him to better serve South Carolina when he made her his home.
Stovall spent twenty-four years as an Infantry Officer in the United States Army, serving a range of posts from Company Commander to managing a four hundred million dollar anti-armor missile program. He is Airborne/Ranger qualified and retired from the Army a Lt. Colonel in 1997. His service to his country continued as Stovall spent the next six years of his life working on Capitol Hill.
Serving in senior staff positions within the US House of Representatives, Stovall got to know the Hill. He served as Congressman Henry Brown’s Chief of Staff from 2000 – 2003, and brought to that post three years of previous Hill experience. During his time in Washington, Stovall served as an advisor on a range of issues – including National Security, Transportation and Veterans Affairs. He was also responsible for the smooth operation of a Congressional Office that attended to thousands of constituent needs.
For the last six years, Stovall has helped Charleston Southern University more effectively accomplish it’s mission, and provide a quality education to deserving young Americans. As Vice President for Advancement and Marketing at CSU, Stovall supervised the Development Department, Alumni Office and the University Relations Department.
As a community leader, Stovall serves as a member of the Board of Directors for the Berkeley Chamber of Commerce, Coastal Carolina Boy Scouts of America, Campus Outreach and the Palmetto Family Council. He is also a member of the Downtown Charleston Rotary Club. Stovall and his family attend East Cooper Baptist Church in Mt. Pleasant.
Stovall has been married to the love of his life – Jan Pitts of Dallas, Texas, for thirty-six years. They have three children – Meredith, a graduate of Southern Methodist University, is married to Shane Knight of Kosciusko, MS,and lives in Richmond, VA; Evelyn, a graduate of Union University, and lives in Charleston; and Stovall III, who graduated from The Citadel as well, is serving as a 2nd Lt. in the Army and deployed to Korea in early Feb. 2010. Stovall has spent his life serving others, and wants to continue to do so by serving the people of the First District of South Carolina.
