Info | Allen received his B.S. from Appalachian State University and his M.P.A. from the University of Georgia. He began his career in Winston-Salem as Assistant to the City Manager. Subsequent promotions were to Director of Evaluation, Public Safety Coordinator, the Director of Development and Deputy City Manager. He is currently president of The Winston-Salem Alliance, a non-profit development corporation created to improve economic vitality and create jobs in Winston-Salem. During his 31 years in Winston-Salem, he has been active with the N.C. Development Association where he has been president; with the Triad March of Dimes where he has been chairman and vice chairman; and the Board of Directors of the Salvation Army Boys' Club. He is past chairman of the Winston-Salem Arts Council, past member of the Tourism Development Authority and the Housing Authority of Winston-Salem. Allen also served Sertoma West as Gold Honor President and vice-president. He has also served on the long-range planning committees of the United Way and Goodwill Industries.
He currently serves on the Board and Executive Committee of the United Way, the Children's Museum, and the N.C. Stroke Association. He is an active member of Wake Forest Baptist Church where he is a former member of the Board of Deacons. In 2003, Allen was awarded 2002 Man of the Year by The Chronicle and also received the Winston-Salem Foundation Award for 2002.
He was elected Mayor of the City of Winston-Salem in November 2001.
Allen is a member of the Leadership Winston-Salem Class of 1989 and has served as program co-chair.
