Info | John J. Murphy, of Morris Township, is the 2003 director of the Morris County Board of Chosen Freeholders, a role he held in 2002 as well. Murphy first joined the board in 1998 and served as deputy director in 2000 and again in 2001. Over the past several years, Murphy has led the county’s efforts to obtain from the state more than 400 acres of excess land at Greystone Park State Psychiatric Hospital in Parsippany.
He is a former member of the Morris Township Committee, a position he held from 1994 to 1998. Murphy is a former deputy mayor of Morris Township and served as mayor of the community in 1996 and 1997.
Since becoming a freeholder, Murphy has served as liaison to Law Enforcement, Public Safety, & Judiciary, which includes the Morris County Firefighters & Police Training Academy, the offices of the Prosecutor and the Sheriff, and the New Jersey State Superior Court in Morris County. He has served as deputy liaison to Administration & Finance and as a member of county’s Facilities Review and Labor Union committees. Freeholder Murphy is also one of the county’s representatives to the NJ Association of Counties.
Murphy is a volunteer firefighter in Morris Township and a former captain and president of the Woodland Fire Company. He is a former commissioner of the Morris County Sheriff's Crimestoppers program. A financial consultant with Merrill Lynch, he brings a strong financial background to the freeholder board.
Freeholder Murphy is married with two young daughters and one young son.
