Info | Born in 1961, Ken Pentel grew up in Twin Cities of Minnesota. As a teenager, Pentel attended Hopkins Eisenhower High School. He moved to California following graduation in 1979. As he and his mother drove into Los Angeles, he thought the haze blanketing the city looked strange. Pentel soon learned that what he saw was not natural. The smog shocked Pentel. Shortly thereafter, he became active in environmental politics while trying to become an actor.
After nearly a decade in California, Pentel returned to Minneapolis. He was accepted into the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities and studied Speech Communications between 1987 and 1989. Although Pentel never finished his degree, he remained active in environmental politics. Pentel wanted to make Minnesota a better place to live, and in April 1986, Pentel began working for Green Peace. His tenure with the organization lasted for eleven years. During this time, Pentel served as a Field Organizer and as the groups Spokesperson.
By the mid-1990s, Pentel had developed a name for himself in environmental circles. As a result, he became active in the nascent Minnesota Green Party. Pentel used his affiliation with the Green Party to become the statewide organizer for the 1996 Nader-LaDuke Presidential campaign. The experience invigorated Pentel, and two years later he ran his first statewide campaign for Governor of Minnesota.
