InfoTURNER, Clarence Wyly, a Representative from Tennessee; born on a farm near Clydeton, Humphreys County, Tenn., October 22, 1866; attended the public schools, a preparatory school in Edgewood, Dickson County, Tenn., and National Normal Institute, Lebanon, Ohio; was graduated from the law department of Northern Indiana Normal College at Valparaiso in 1904; was admitted to the bar the same year and commenced practice at Waverly, Humphreys County, Tenn.; editor of the Waverly Sentinel; chairman of the Democratic committee of Humphreys County for fifteen years; member of the State senate 1900, 1901, and 1909-1912; delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1920; elected mayor of Waverly, Tenn., in 1920; city attorney; elected as a Democrat to the Sixty-seventh Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Lemuel P. Padgett and served from November 7, 1922, to March 3, 1923; was not a candidate for reelection in 1922 to the Sixty-eighth Congress; returned to Waverly, Tenn., and engaged in banking and agricultural pursuits; served as county judge of Humphreys County 1924-1933; elected to the Seventy-third and to the three succeeding Congresses and served from March 4, 1933, until his death in Washington, D.C., March 23, 1939; interment in Marable Cemetery, Waverly, Tenn.
