He also served as Mayor of Commerce.
J. Mac Barber resigned his position as Commissioner on May 1, 1998 to run for the office of Lieutenant Governor. Prior thereto, Barber had been elected to five terms on the Commission. During his tenure, he was recognized by the Legislature for his efforts in protecting the rights of consumers. Mr. Barber has been acknowledged on numerous occasions as an advocate for the elderly, children and the poor by organizations such as the Georgia Association of Educators, the Georgia Science and Technology Commission, Emory University�s Kappa Phi Kappa Literary Society and the National Association of Retired People. Following his resignation, Lauren "Bubba" McDonald, Jr. was appointed by Governor Zell Miller and subsequently elected to serve out the remainder of Mr. Barber�s term on the Commission.
