InfoCONGER, James Lockwood, a Representative from Michigan; born in Trenton, N.J., February 18, 1805; moved to New York in 1809 with his parents, who settled in Canandaigua, Ontario County; attended the district schools and Canandaigua Academy; studied medicine; moved to Lancaster, Ohio, in 1822; taught school for several years; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1825 and commenced practice in Lancaster, Ohio; moved to Cleveland, Ohio, and continued the practice of law from 1826 to 1837, when he moved to Macomb County, Mich., and laid out the town of Belvidere; engaged in banking and mercantile pursuits until 1850; moved to Mount Clemens, Mich.; elected as a Whig to the Thirty-second Congress (March 4, 1851-March 3, 1853); declined to be a candidate for renomination in 1852; resumed his former business pursuits; owing to ill health retired from active business pursuits; died in St. Clair, St. Clair County, Mich., April 10, 1876; interment in Green Lawn Cemetery, Columbus, Ohio.
