InfoFIELD, Moses Whelock, a Representative from Michigan; born in Watertown, Jefferson County, N.Y., February 10, 1828; moved with his parents to Cato, Cayuga County, N.Y.; attended the public schools, and was graduated from the academy in Victor, N.Y.; moved to Detroit, Mich., in 1844 and engaged in mercantile and agricultural pursuits; alderman of Detroit 1863-1865; elected as a Republican to the Forty-third Congress (March 4, 1873-March 3, 1875); unsuccessful for reelection in 1874 to the Forty-fourth Congress; instrumental in organizing the Independent Greenback Party, having called the national convention at Indianapolis, Ind., May 17, 1876; regent of the University of Michigan in 1888; lived on his farm, “Linden Lawn,” in the township of Hamtramck, a suburb of Detroit, where he died March 14, 1889; interment in Woodmere Cemetery.
