Info | Maj. Henry Lee Bridges
In 1947, Governor R. Gregg Cherry appointed him auditor of the State of North Carolina. He was subsequently elected to his first full term in 1948, and to seven subsequent terms, retiring in 1981, after serving for 34 years. As state auditor, Henry instituted a Uniform Accounting System for all the departments of state government. This system has been adopted by many other states. Because of his insistence that the State of North Carolina financial matters be handled with the highest standards of integrity, many political commentators considered Henry Bridges to have been a "thorn in the side" of many of the Governors of North Carolina in maintaining those standards. Henry also led in the formation of the Law Enforcement Officers Benefit and Retirement Fund. He was instrumental in the enactment of the Firefighters Pension and Death Benefits Act. The latter program benefited the families of the firefighters lost in the Sept. 11, 2001, tragedy at the World Trade Center. Henry served for 11 years as the executive director of the National Association of State Auditors, Controllers and Treasurers.
